Our history

Westwood’s story starts in 1974, when Graham Day — a well-known figure in the Durban insurance industry — left the insurance company world to found his own broking house, Graham Day Insurance Brokers. Over the next twenty-five years the firm grew steadily, and in 2003 it was restructured as GDI Schofield, incorporating part of the John Schofield Insurance Brokers book.

In 2008, FNB Insurance Brokers acquired GDI Schofield’s commercial and domestic book and absorbed the operation into its Durban office. Within eighteen months it was clear that a corporate model and an independent brokerage serve clients in fundamentally different ways — and FNB accepted an offer from the former GDI management to re-acquire the book. Westwood Insurance Brokers was formed in 2010 as the result.

Westwood has since grown into a highly competitive, medium-sized independent broking house operating from La Lucia Ridge, Durban, enjoying the support of all the main South African insurers. Many of our people served clients under the GDI name — together the team carries more than a century of accumulated industry knowledge.

Westwood Insurance Brokers (Pty) Ltd is an Authorised Financial Services Provider, trading under FSP licence number 16726, and specialises in all forms of corporate, commercial and personal short-term insurance.
